When Yuki Tanaka’s grandmother began living alone in Kobe, the family’s concern was not limited to medical emergencies. They worried about missed meals, an unusually quiet phone, a heater left running and the emotional strain of asking an older person to report every small activity. Tanaka’s response was a discreet smart home system designed to support independence rather than turn a house into a surveillance centre.
Her company, Mimamori Home, combines motion sensors, temperature monitoring and carefully designed alerts for relatives and care professionals. In this interview, Tanaka explains how personal experience shaped her business, why Japanese families are cautious about connected devices and what Australian communities might learn from her approach to ageing, technology and women’s entrepreneurship.
A personal concern became a market problem
Tanaka remembers the period when her grandmother moved from a family home into a smaller apartment. “Everyone wanted to help, but our support was fragmented,” she says. “My mother called several times a day, my uncle managed appointments and I checked in whenever I could. We cared deeply, but we did not have a calm system.”
The family’s experience reflected a wider demographic shift. Japan has one of the world’s oldest populations, and many older people live in single-person households. Listening before building
Before developing a prototype, Tanaka interviewed older residents, family members, home helpers and community nurses. Her research found that older people often objected to products marketed as “monitoring” or “supervision”. They wanted reassurance for their children, but they did not want to feel treated as incapable.
This distinction shaped the product’s language and design. Mimamori Home avoids cameras inside the home. How Mimamori works inside the home
Mimamori Home is built around a small central hub connected to low-energy sensors. A relative can receive a simple notification through a mobile app, while authorised care workers can access a limited dashboard. The system does not attempt to diagnose illness. It identifies possible changes and leaves the decision-making to people.
That restraint is important. A smart speaker may answer a question, and a wearable may measure a pulse, but neither automatically solves the problem of trust. Tanaka says her company focuses on “quiet data”: information that helps someone notice a change without making the older resident perform wellness for a device.
The service also includes a human response protocol. If an alert remains unexplained, the nominated contact is encouraged to call first. If there is a serious concern, a local support person or emergency service can be contacted. The product therefore sits between consumer electronics and community care rather than pretending to replace either.
Privacy is central to the company’s position. Data is minimised, access is permission-based and families are told what the sensors can and cannot detect. Tanaka believes that privacy explanations must be understandable to a 78-year-old user, not written only for a technology lawyer.
Building a women-led venture in Japan
Tanaka entered entrepreneurship after working in product development for a large electronics manufacturer. She had technical experience and a strong professional network, but she says neither guaranteed confidence when she began raising capital. “I was comfortable discussing engineering,” she explains. “I found it harder to describe the size of the business opportunity without feeling that I was exaggerating.”
Her fundraising process also exposed the importance of public and private support for women founders. Investors asked about family responsibilities, personal availability and whether an ageing-care product could scale beyond a niche market. Tanaka responded by presenting evidence from interviews, pilot households and care organisations rather than relying on a purely aspirational pitch.

Tanaka sees potential relevance in Australia’s home-care environment, including the role of My Aged Care, local councils and community organisations. A connected sensor system could help families notice a change in routine, but it would need to fit existing care plans and clearly explain who receives an alert. It could not simply be added to a home without agreement from the resident and the care team.
The Australian housing context also matters. A detached home in Brisbane may have different sensor needs from an apartment in central Melbourne. Outdoor heat, bushfire smoke, air-conditioning use and long distances between households can affect wellbeing and response times. Tanaka says her company would need local partners rather than assuming that a product designed for a Japanese apartment could be transferred unchanged.
Cultural expectations would shape adoption too. Australia’s multicultural communities include families with Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Greek, Italian and many other backgrounds. A service may need multilingual instructions, culturally sensitive onboarding and options for including relatives who live overseas. “Technology should make family care more manageable,” Tanaka says, “not impose one definition of a good family.”
Comparing routes to safer independent living
No single device can resolve the pressures created by population ageing, workforce shortages and family distance. A wearable emergency button may be affordable and familiar, while a community visitor can notice changes that no sensor will understand. Smart home technology is most useful when it fills a specific gap without claiming to replace human contact.
For Australian families, the choice may depend on the resident’s mobility, confidence with technology, internet connection and access to nearby services. Reliable broadband through the NBN can support connected devices, but connectivity alone does not guarantee a useful response. Someone must still receive the notification, interpret it and decide what to do.

Tanaka argues that the most ethical model combines these options. A sensor can indicate that something may be wrong, a relative can call, and a care worker can follow up when appropriate. The goal is a layered safety net, rather than dependence on a single algorithm.
The business of dignity and care
Tanaka’s company measures success differently from many consumer technology firms. It tracks installation, continued use and response times, but it also asks whether residents feel more confident at home. A product that generates frequent false alarms may look active in a dashboard while creating anxiety for everyone involved.
The founder is equally attentive to the economics of care. Families may be willing to pay for peace of mind, yet affordability remains critical for older people on fixed incomes. Employers, insurers, housing providers and public programmes could eventually help distribute the cost, but each arrangement raises questions about consent, data ownership and unequal access.
Her approach to growth is deliberately cautious. Mimamori Home has focused on partnerships with local care providers rather than attempting to sell directly to every household. This creates a slower route to expansion, but it helps the company understand the daily realities of carers and the limitations of existing support services.
Tanaka also wants the business to create employment pathways for women. Product research, customer education, community partnerships and care coordination all require skills that are often undervalued. “Women are already solving many care problems informally,” she says. “Entrepreneurship can give that knowledge a formal place in the economy.”
What the founder wants people to remember
Tanaka does not describe Mimamori Home as a replacement for family, neighbours or professional carers. Its purpose is more modest: to make a change visible early enough for a person to respond. That can mean a daughter in Sydney calling her father in Nagoya, a community worker in regional Queensland checking on a client, or a neighbour noticing that an alert does not match the usual pattern.
Her story also demonstrates how women’s entrepreneurship can emerge from lived experience without being confined to a personal story. Tanaka identified a social problem, tested assumptions with users, built a product around dignity and developed a business model connected to public and community systems.
The most important lesson is simple: technology for elderly care should protect independence, respect privacy and strengthen human relationships. A smart home becomes genuinely useful when its sensors lead to thoughtful support rather than constant observation.
