About Julie Taeko
Researcher, writer, and storyteller exploring women's entrepreneurship and empowerment in Japan.
Julie Taeko was a Master's Degree in Economics candidate at Kyoto University, where her research centered on strategies to expand and empower women entrepreneurs in Japan. As a recipient of the Japanese Education Ministry's MEXT scholarship, she combined rigorous academic inquiry with on-the-ground storytelling, conducting in-depth interviews with 19 women founders across the country.
Her work explored the challenges and successes of Japanese female entrepreneurs — from healthcare and technology to fashion and design — seeking to understand what drives women to launch and grow their own ventures in a traditionally male-dominated business landscape.
Research & Presentations
In late November 2018, Julie presented her research on women entrepreneurs and empowerment in Japan at National Taiwan University (NTU) as part of a cross-cultural exchange program. The presentation drew on her interviews and fieldwork, offering comparative insights into the entrepreneurial ecosystems of Japan and Taiwan.
Beyond Academia
Julie also authored a "Growing Up Mixed-Race" eBook, reflecting her personal experiences and broader conversations about identity. Her writing spans academic research, expat life in Japan, and profiles of inspiring women founders — all shared through a warm, accessible lens.
She maintained an active presence across social media, connecting with readers and fellow researchers on Twitter (@JulieTaeko), LinkedIn, Medium, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.
